This week I began my internship at A.I.R. Gallery!! Opened in 1972 it was the first professional space dedicated to promoting the work of women artists. It is a co-op non-profit gallery meaning that all the artists represented are members of the gallery!!... Here are the artists on view now:
Regina Granne's new series titled Planes addresses both the surface of the picture plane, children's paper planes and drawings as well as adult wargames and their representation in news images. In painting still lifes, or Nature Mort, Regina is concerned deeply with the impact of war and its invisibility to the public.
Annete Rusin is interested in conventions of beauty and the upkeep that it is associated with. With Road Work, she has created an installation spanning two walls, activating the space that is framed by the exposed ceiling ducts. Layers of sheetrock and other construction material are analogous to the body.
Mimi Oritsky paints the landscape, farsighted. In the past, when private flights were readily available she would paint the landscape as it is seen from above. Recently, she spent several weeks in Maine painting and drawing the nearby river, trees and grass. Mimi allows us to sit with her, drinking coffee under the dock, clutching our napkins and breathing in the fresh northern air. Her work is utterly honest, to the materials and subject.
A.I.R. Gallery is located at 111 Front Street, #228, in the DUMBO neighborhood of Brooklyn. Gallery hours: Wednesday – Sunday, 11 – 6 pm.
